"No-one ever built a statue of a critic"
Fairlop have entered Brass Band competitions since the very early days of the band.
Arguably the band's greatest achievement so far has been winning the National Brass Band Championships (3rd Section) in October 1995. But they have always impressed.
This is a band that has achieved some amazing results when you consider that the band retains a core of players that were in the founding Junior school band, that they only practice once a week, and that they are willing to give chances to beginner musicians so readily...
Introduced by Kevin Jordan; the annual 'toilet seat' award is given to the band member who has demonstrated a lack of one of the .
The recipient is awarded the trophy at one of our Summer concerts. There is normally much competition for this non-coveted award.
The "Dennis Carney Most Improved Player of the Year' award, was Introduced by Band President Dennis Carney, to honour those bandsmen who have been seen to have improved (musically) the most over the year.
A fitting tribute from the music teacher who started it all.
Most Improved Player
In Autumn 2011 Baritone player Holly Miller lost her brave fight against Cancer.
It was the year before that Holly, who was only in her mid twenties, was diagnosed with a very rare form of Cancer. In typical fashion she never complained and bravely fought as hard as she could, even managing to meet one of her goals by returning to play with the Band at our Summer concert in 2011. Tragically this was the last time Holly played with Fairlop Brass.
Spirit of Fairlop
Holly lost her battle in October 2011. Her family have told us that after Holly first heard the Band play she had said to her parents that it was one of her ambitions to play with the Band. Holly became a much valued member of Fairlop Brass and the Band were honoured to play at her funeral.
Working closely with our Musical Director Holly’s family wanted to donate a lasting tribute to her and so we have “The Spirit of Fairlop” award. This will be given every year to one of the “unsung hero’s” of the Band. This person may not be able to take on one of the key roles within the Band that can lead to Bandsman of the Year, but they take on any number of tasks, turn up each week and always give 100% - just like Holly.
The K.C. Jordan Bandsman of the year was introduced in the late 1970's to recognise the worthy individual within Fairlop who Kevin has identified as having improved the band by their actions during the year.
It is Awarded at the Summer Concert, ensuring that the recipient recieves the applause of not just the band, but of the appreciative audience aswell.
